Welcome to Classic, the third studio album of Manchester-based brass ensemble, A4 Brass Quartet. In complete contrast to the group’s debut album of original compositions - Mists of the Mountains - this album instead brings together a collection of arrangements, mainly done ‘in-house’ by Jonathan Bates & Chris Robertson, where you will hear A4 Brass reimagine some of the greatest works in Western classical music. With the ensemble’s distinctive instrumentation of cornet, tenor horn, baritone and euphonium, these celebrated works gain renewed life and identity in a chamber music setting. This album features many of the quartet’s favourite concert music and is structured in a way that you can listen to it as if it were a concert.
The exciting debut recording of A4 Brass Quartet, "Mists of the Mountains" features music by some of the leading composers in the UK and Europe, who have written works especially for the ensemble. Featured composers include Martin Ellerby, Edward Gregson, Thomas Doss and Nigel Clarke. The title track was composed by the quartet's very own Jonathan Bates. The work, "Mists of the Mountains" is a seminal piece for the group, being the work with which A4 won the prestigious Christopher Rowland Ensemble of the Year Award at the Royal Northern College of Music. A groundbreaking ensemble recording, Mists of the Mountains is essential listening for all fans of cutting edge brass music and the A4 Brass Quartet.
